Long-term study visa (X1-visa) is issued to those intending to study in China mainland for a period of more than 180 days.

(1) Application Requirements

(2) Duration

  • The X1 visa is typically valid for the duration of the student’s study program (more than 6 months).
  • It can be extended or converted into a residence permit once the student arrives in China.

(3) Restrictions and Conditions

  • Holders of a X1-Visa must apply for a residence permit from the immigration department of the local public security authority in the place intended to stay within 30 days of entry to China.
  • Please provide the appropriate additional documents if you are in one of the following situations:

Short-term study visa (X2-visa) is issued to those intending to study in China mainland for a period of no more than 180 days.

(1) Application Requirements

Similar to the X1 visa, but you do not need the Form JW201 or Form JW202.

  • The X2 China student visa is valid for short-term study periods (less than 6 months).
  • It is typically not extendable beyond 180 days.

How long does it take to process a China Student Visa?

  1. Regular processing: Pick up on the 4th working day.
  2. Express processing: Pick up on the 3rd working day (this service requires approval).
  3. Urgent processing: Pick up on the 2nd working day (this service requires approval).

Note: Depending on individual cases, the approval time for some visa applications may be longer than 4 working days.

To apply for a China study visa, you must first gain admission to an accredited Chinese educational institution. General requirements:

Step 1: Receive Admission Notice and JW202/DQ Form

After you accept your offer, your university will issue:

  • Admission Notice
  • JW202 or DQ form (issued by the Ministry of Education)

These are mandatory for your visa application.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

Collect and prepare all required documents according to your local embassy’s checklist (supporting documents, application materials).

Step 3: Submit your application

Submit your application to:

  • The Chinese embassy or consulate in your country, or
  • A Chinese Visa Application Service Center

Submission may be in person or by mail, depending on local regulations.

Step 4: Pay the visa fee and wait for processing

Visa fees vary by nationality and service type. Check with your local visa center or embassy for the price.

You can track your application using the reference number provided.

Step 5: Collect your passport and visa

Once approved, you will receive your passport with the visa sticker attached.
