About
Hechi University is a multi-disciplinary undergraduate institution in which offers programs in economics, law, education, literature, and history. Founded in 1951 as the Yishan Normal School of Guangxi, Hechi University later formed after a merger. It came from a merger of Hechi Teachers Higher College and Yizhou Nationalities Normal School.
After 70 years of development, the university became a multi-disciplinary undergraduate institution. It offers programs in economics, law, education, literature, and history.
It also offers programs in science, engineering, management, and art. Overall, the university has 51 undergraduate majors.

City and Local Area Information
Hechi is a Tier 5 city located in Guangxi province. Surrounded by mountains, it is a city connected with nature. Hechi’s highest mountain is the “Nameless Peak,” rising to a height of over 1,600 meters.
Compared to bigger cities in China, the cost of living Hechi is quite affordable. This doesn’t mean that Hechi compromises comfort for the sake of affordability. The city offers all the conveniences associated with China’s modern digital development.
Public bus rides in Hechi are only 2RMB per ride. In addition, car hailing with apps like DiDi is available as well.
Hechi combines the mineral, agriculture, and forestry industries. It also draws most of its energy from hydropower, from over 630 streams, creeks and rivers.
In addition, the tropical wet climate is perfect for agricultural production. Hechi produces more than 400 types of crops, from pineapples to tobacco.
In summer, the temperatures often exceed over 30°C, with high humidity. The winter seasons is mild, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 15°C.
Hechi is home to a stunning number of rare and protected species. Over 1800 species of plants, 150 species of trees, 60 species of land animals, and more are present in Hechi.
One of Hechi’s most defining characteristics is it’s rich history and ethnic diversity. The city hosts a rich ethnic culture, creating a vibrant environment for cultural immersion.
International Students can participate in local traditional festivals:
- The Zhuang community’s “Sanzhuan Festival” – the most significant traditional celebration for the Zhuang people, comparable to Chinese New Year festivities. Celebrated on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month. Celebrated by singing and dancing performances, traditional sports, and the unique “duet singing” traditional art.
- The Yao Ethnic “Panwang Festival” – celebrated on the 10th day of the 10th lunar month. The festival commemorates the ancestor of the Yao people – Panwang. The festivities include banquets featuring traditional Yao cuisine, dragon and lion dance performances, sacrificial rites, plus making and exchanging customary Yao handicrafts.
- The Maonan Ethnic “Singing Festival” – celebrated on the 6th day of the 6th lunar month. Maonan people celebrate with singing contests, dancing, folk art showcases, and traditional sports events. Through song, the Maonan community conveys unity, love, and the beauty of life.
