Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981, is a comprehensive institution. It is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Government, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. Notably, STU is the only public university in the world that receives long-term funding from the Li Ka Shing Foundation.

The university campus is located in the northwest of Shantou, Guangdong Province, a seaside city. The campus covers a total area of 1.26 square kilometers and has a floor space of 435,200 square meters. Currently, STU has a staff of 1,533 and over 10,005 students. Since its inception, the university has nurtured nearly 90,000 graduates.

STU is comprised of 10 colleges and schools. At present, it enrolls qualified students from across the country, including the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Taiwan. The university boasts a National Key Discipline and offers Cheung Kong Scholar Professorships. It also provides a variety of Master’s, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral programs. Additionally, STU hosts both National Key Laboratories and Provincial Key Laboratories. It is home to National Pilot Sites for Innovative Talent Training.

  • Dining Services: There are a number of eateries and noodle shops on campus that provide lunch, dinner, and snacks at STU. These eateries generally serve local cuisine, while some also serve Western dishes, even sushi. In order to provide students with easy access to refreshments all day long, there are other establishments on campus that serve drinks and snacks.
  • Accommodations for Students: STU offers shared apartments with single or double beds for international students. Essential facilities like television, internet connection, simple furnishings, and private restrooms are provided in every dorm. The monthly accommodation prices, which vary from 800 to 1,600 RMB per month, provide students with reasonably priced living options.
  • Library: The STU library, often referred to as the “Most Beautiful Library in Asia,” spans 21,000 square meters and houses over 1.74 million volumes. It features 1,500 seats, 27 seminar rooms, an exhibition room, a lecture hall, a conference center, and a student lounge. In addition, the library is equipped with wireless network for easy access to online journals and databases, supporting the academic and research needs of students and faculty.
  • Sports Facilities: STU’s Sports Park is a comprehensive facility covering 60,868.6 square meters, including a 6,000-seat multi-use arena, an Olympic-sized swimming pool (natatorium), sports and fitness training facilities, a conference hall, a 200-room hotel, and parking for 200 vehicles. This state-of-the-art complex supports a wide range of athletic and recreational activities for students.
  • Research Centers: STU is home to several prominent research institutes and laboratories, such as:
    • Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Biotechnology
    • Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Disaster Warning and Protection

Shantou University (STU) is located in Shantou, a coastal city in eastern Guangdong Province, southern China. As one of the original five Special Economic Zones, Shantou promotes international trade and investment and has developed into a significant regional hub with economic ties to over 165 countries.

The city is known for its rich cultural heritage, particularly the unique Chaoshan culture, which features distinct traditions, language, and cuisine. For instance, local Chaoshan cuisine, a variant of Cantonese food, is famous for its fresh seafood dishes and the traditional practice of Gongfu tea ceremonies.

Transportation in Shantou is well-developed. Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport, about 29 kilometers from the city center, offers flights to major cities in China and international destinations such as Bangkok and Singapore. The city also has high-speed rail connections to urban centers like Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. While the Shantou Metro is under development, the existing transportation infrastructure ensures convenient mobility for residents and visitors.
