Ningxia Medical University, was originally established in 1958 as Ningxia Medical College. It is the only medical-focused higher education establishment in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The university has a long history of providing medical education and is located in the capital of the region, Yinchuan.

In 1962, it was integrated into Ningxia University and renamed the School of Medicine. A merger in 1972 with Shanghai Railway Medical College led to the reestablishment of Ningxia Medical College. In 2002, the Ningxia Health School and Nursing School were incorporated. Thus, the institution was promoted to a comprehensive medical university in 2008 and renamed Ningxia Medical University. In 2013, it gained authorization to confer doctoral degrees in Clinical Medicine, Basic Medical Science, and Public Health & Preventive Health.
