Top Universities in China 2021

Higher education in China is getting better and better every year. Nowadays, students from all around the world are coming in this country to keep or completer their studies: from cuisine to culture, china offers a unique 360° experience. 

Thanks to the increasing number of universities all over the country, China has many choice of places to study. However, to categorize the top universities in China the government established the Project 211 first and then the Project 985

The Project 211 was established in 1995 and its purpose is to raise the standards of China’s top universities. Institutions that reach a certain standard are rewarded with significantly increased funds. There have been 112 higher education institutions associated with Project 211. Three years later the Project 985 was established: it was similar to the first one but just 39 universities received the funds. Most of these 39 universities are also ranked among the top 500 universities in the world. 

The most selective group is the C9 League, a group composed by 9 top universities in China, which between them receive 10 per cent of China’s national research budget.

In the light of above, these is the current ranking of the first five top universities in China (in 2021):


1. Tsinghua University (清华大学)

Location: Beijing. 

Established in: 1991.

Tsinghua university is a comprehensive research university. It has 20 schools and 54 departments which cover disciplines in arts, economics, education, engineer, science and more. Since its establishment, it has produced many notable leaders in science, engineering, politics, business, academia, and culture. It’s also ranked 15th in the best universities in the world and first in Asia.


2. Peking University (北京大学)

Location: Beijing. 

Established in: 1898.

It was the first modern national university in China, and since its founding it has had a reputation as a leading educational institution. Peking University's staff include 76 members of the Chinese academy of Science, 19 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 25 members of the World Academy of Science,

 Peking University's library is one of the largest libraries in the world, containing over 8 million volumes.


3. Fudan University (复旦大学)

Location: Shanghai. 

Established in: 1905.

The university takes a liberal arts approach to teaching, with a great amount of its courses taught in English. Internationalization is also a high priority at the institution with global connections and exchange programs at almost 200 overseas universities. It is an important academic center for Chinese humanities, natural sciences, and medical studies


4. University of Science and Technology of China (中国科学技术大学)

Location: Hefei. 

Established in: 1958.

USTC was founded to boost science and technology education in China. There are 15 schools teaching any kind of science and technology disciplines. It also has two national laboratories: the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory and the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale.


5. Zhejiang University (浙江大学)

Location: Hangzhou.

Established in: 1897.

This is one of the oldest and most selective china’s universities. The university is organized into 37 colleges, schools, and departments offering more than 140 undergraduate and 300 graduate programs.

The library collection contains more than 7.7 million volumes, which is one of China's largest academic collections. The university also includes 7 affiliated hospitals, 1 museum, 2 international joint institutes, and boasts over 150 student organizations.
